Using Telemedicine
New and innovative uses for telemedicine are constantly being developed. At present telemedicine has three main uses:
- clinical events to deliver patient care,
- educational and professional development events for healthcare providers, and
- healthcare administrative events among providers and organizations.
Benefits of Telemedicine
In 2008/09, OTN delivered 53,745 clinical events, 9,230 educational events and 9,794 healthcare administrative events over the network.
Patients and healthcare providers often cite the following as some of the many benefits of telemedicine:
- improved timelines of diagnosis and treatment
- improved health outcomes
- reduced travel, time and expense, and the ability to receive care close to home
- better access to a broad range of clinical programs and education.
